International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, which is observed annually on August 23 was chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to raise
awareness about the horrifying nature of the slave trade and reminds people about its implications.
Jovianinsight correspondent, Interacting with the International Director purpose for living network, Doctor Kingsley Oji, described the slave trade as the dark period where Africa was the epicenter of the act, which still affects the psychology of the continent.
He noted that Slavery Remembrance Day is not just about remembering the horrors of slavery and honoring its victims; but about working to ensure the system of racism that caused slavery is abolished completely in today’s world.
Doctor Oji further advocates that the government and critical stakeholders should enact laws and make policies that will strengthen the abolition of modern slavery across board.
