Rule #5: Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.

Chapter 5 of Peterson’s book is about parenting.

But non-parents, take heart. There’s still plenty in there for you, too.

He shares examples of excellent parenting as well as tragic parenting. He lays the burden of parenting correctly and squarely on the shoulders of both moms and dads to raise human beings who will contribute positively
to society.

Peterson encourages parents to be disciplinarians who inspire children to
behave properly. He also advocates that parents should be merciful, and caring, and “act as proxies for the real world”.

Bottom line: If you hate your kids, so will the rest of the world.

Rule #5 Summary: Peterson advises parents not to try to be their
children’s friends, because…
“Friends have very limited authority to correct.” – Jordan Peterson
