The National Inland Waterways Agency (NIHSA) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians residing in flood-prone areas, urging them to relocate to safer grounds immediately. The agency’s director general, Umar Mohammed, made the announcement during a recent interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
Mohammed explained that the warning stems from the planned release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. This annual practice often leads to severe flooding in several Nigerian states. To mitigate the impact, the NIHSA and Cameroonian authorities have agreed to release the water in phases.
However, the agency has listed 11 states as particularly vulnerable to flooding: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.
While the situation remains relatively calm for now, Mohammed emphasized the need for immediate action. He stressed that individuals must play a proactive role in flood prevention, including clearing drains and avoiding flood-prone areas.
The NIHSA director also highlighted the recent tragedy in Maiduguri, where overflowing Alau Dam claimed over 30 lives and displaced thousands. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of flooding.
Mohammed concluded by urging Nigerians to heed the warning and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their properties.
