President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on all stakeholders in the upcoming Edo State governorship elections to conduct themselves peacefully and sportingly.
The election is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga today, said the president implored the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will.
It said, “He believes in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders adding that democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game,”.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on all political actors and stakeholders to work towards deepening the nation’s democracy by prioritising peace and security in the Edo governorship election on Saturday.
Jonathan in a statement by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze in Abuja, urged politicians to pursue their interests within the confines of the law and refrain from activities that could undermine the peace and stability of the state.
He said that the Edo election placed a moral burden on state agencies especially the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission to rise to their constitutional responsibilities as independent arbiters in Nigeria democratic process.
The cousin to Politician and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Anugbum Onuoha has called on political parties in Edo State, to come forward with incriminating evidence against him in the wake of the governorship election in the state.
Onuoha is the Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner for the election billed to hold on Saturday.
It would be recalled that Edo PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to redeploy Onuoha over ties with Wike. Aziegbemi had expressed a lack of confidence in the REC’s ability to conduct a free and fair election in the state.
But Onuoha today, said he is competent enough to conduct a free and fair election in Edo State. He also urged political parties to disregard allegations of likely favouritism peddled against him.
