Sudden Frequency Rise Caused Thursday’s Grid Collapse, Recovery Ongoing – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a sudden surge in grid frequency, rising from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, triggered the latest collapse of the national power grid on Thursday. The incident, which occurred at around 11:29 am, marks the second grid failure in just three days.

In a statement released by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, the company explained that efforts to stabilize the grid commenced immediately after the disturbance. The Abuja axis was restored within 28 minutes, although recovery efforts are still ongoing across other affected regions.

According to TCN, the frequency spike resulted from complications at one of its substations, which had to be shut down to prevent further damage. The company is currently undertaking repairs on several key transmission lines and substations as part of its efforts to address the recurring issues.

Among the critical works being carried out are repairs on the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro–Mando axis, upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line.

“Following the submission of the investigative report on the causes of previous grid collapses, we are taking steps to address the identified weaknesses in the system,” TCN said. “This includes both technical upgrades and strategic interventions based on the committee’s recommendations to enhance grid stability and resilience.”

While acknowledging the ongoing instability in the system, TCN assured the public that efforts to close identified gaps and improve the grid’s reliability are underway. However, the company warned that some level of disruption may continue until all major repairs are completed.

“Although repairs and improvements are in progress, we ask for the public’s understanding and patience as we work towards a more stable grid,” the statement added.

Thursday’s collapse is the second in as many days. On Tuesday, parts of the country were plunged into blackouts after the grid experienced a similar failure. TCN attributed that collapse to “a series of line and generator trippings” that caused grid instability.

As TCN continues its repair work, it has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the reliability of the national grid, recognizing the vital role stable power supply plays in Nigeria’s socio-economic development. The company also stressed its efforts to tackle infrastructure challenges, including vandalized transmission lines.
